Porsche presents the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition and its matching Porsche Design Chronograph

The new 911 Targa is now offered in a special limited edition of 992 units, each paired with a unique Porsche Design Chronograph. Both car and watch share iconic design elements from the 1950s and early 1960s. In exclusivity, MISTERWATCH talks to Gerhard Novak, general manager Porsche Design Timepieces about the special watch.

Under the name of 911 Targa 4S Herirtage Design edition, Porsche presents the first of four collector’s models from the Heritage Design strategy. The new product line is described by Oliver Blume, CEO Porsche AG, as a response to customers’ wishes to have more classic details integrated into the modern models. “We are evoking memories of the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s in customers and fans with the Heritage Design models. No brand can translate these elements into the modern day as well as Porsche.”

The 911 Targa limited edition is a masterpiece of Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, the personalization department integrated in the factory. All the 992 units are available with a special paint “Cherry Metallic” and four other exterior colours while the gold logos create an authentic look of the 1950s. Along many details borrowed from the early days of motorsport, the designers chose also to use the historical Porsche Crest of 1963 in the bonnet, steering wheel, wheel cub covers and vehicle key. In the interior, the voice of the past is heard while seeing the two-tone leather combination between the Bordeaux Red leather and OLEA club leather in beige or black. Porsche is using corduroy on seats and door trims as a sign it is reintroducing a special material from the times of the Porsche 356. The only two remaining analogue counters from the dashboard, the rev counter and the stopwatch, are presented with a green illumination as the classic 911s.  Underneath the heritage story, the special edition of Targa 4S comes with all the latest technologies matched to the new 450 hp biturbo engine capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3,6 seconds and of reaching a maximum speed of 304 km/h.

The Porsche Design Chronograph available exclusively for the owners of the limited edition Targa is also a masterpiece of personalization. Talking to Gerhard Novak, the general manager of Porsche Design Timepieces, we discover a project as complex as the car it is matching. The watch is inspired by the legendary 356 as well as the first 911 Targa. The combination between the white seconds hand and the “Phosphorus Green” rings is borrowed from the first Porsche interiors. The hour indices are written with the typical Porsche lettering and the strap is made of genuine Porsche leather.

Gerhard Novak is heading the timepieces division of Porsche Design to meet the high expectations of Porsche owners when it comes to have their cars reflecting their personalities. And when asked about his favorite complication, Gerhard Novak names the challenge of personalizing a watch like no other manufacturer is able to. Among the many options, for the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design edition chronograph, the shape of the oscillating weight can be matched to the car’s wheels design. But then there is the complication of building an oscillating weight in the shape of a car wheel and make it turn.
