WATCHES & WONDERS 2020: Laurent Ferrier Grand Sport Tourbillon
The classical house of Laurent Ferrier makes a first step towards the area of modern design. Grand Sport Tourbillon is the brand’s first model equipped with an integrated steel bracelet.
Laurent Ferrier started his own brand in 2008 after a rich career in motorsport, competing especially in the endurance race of Le Mans during the 1970s. And from that period he got now the inspiration to create the brand’s first sporty watch with an integrated steel bracelet. Grand Sport Tourbillon comes in a 44 mm diameter steel case that combines new design details with the already known shape specific for Laurent Ferrier models. The opaline dial features a particular shade, being blue in its center and turning black near its periphery.
As expected from its creator, the Grand Sport Tourbillon offers a special calibre, one that actually won the Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix in 2010. The mechanism is hand-wound and offers a power reserve of 80 hours. For the new model, having the word “Tourbillon” in its name is the only clue when seen from the front. To actually be to able admire the horological marvel, one has to look at the case back. Besides being discreet, the watch is also more resistant to socks like those of the driver while in his race car.
Laurent Ferrier has never forgotten the importance of ‘feel’. When the legendary watchmaker was competing in his Porsche 935T, he would have felt the road through his fingertips and the seat of his racing overalls. His watches pay due consideration to the notion of tactility. This includes the feel of the crown when the watch is wound, the smooth unobtrusive crown guards sitting close to the wearer’s wrist and, most pertinently, the comfortable ergonomic relationship between the wearer and their Grand Sport Tourbillon.
The special model is produced in a numbered and limited edition of 12 pieces.
