Tudor Mihaita: Why I am still wearing a Watch

“Why are you still wearing a watch?” people are asking me all the time. “Watch” is in this context that mechanical instrument with the practical function of telling the time. Because the smart watch is also a type of “watch”. So those who are asking me this question are immediately mentioning that they are referring to the classical watches. “Look! My smart watch is telling me the time, but it also tells me how many steps I walked today, and I also get my Facebook notifications on it,” and then a whole list of advantages follows. Then I wonder why are people still riding horses if the car was invented? Why do we buy a book if we can see the movie? Why own a painting when you can see a picture of it? I think we feel the need to disconnect from a world that is becoming more and more digital. And to reconnect to our original nature, which is exclusively a mechanical one. A need to reconnect to what we were, and we might lose one day. To life, in its purest form. Because even that simple gesture of winding a watch daily, using its crown, it is another way of bringing it to life.
